Curcumin, the anti-inflammatory antioxidant compound in the spice turmeric, has been shown to improve circulation as effectively as aerobic exercise.
In one study, 32 individuals with similar health profiles at the start of the study took a curcumin supplement or a placebo. A third group took moderate aerobic exercise training only.
After eight weeks, while there were no changes for placebo, both the curcumin and exercise groups had better relaxation, widening, and functioning of blood vessels and arteries compared to the start of the study. Researchers said that both aerobic exercise and curcumin may improve age-related decline in the circulatory system and taking a curcumin supplement may help prevent cardiovascular disease in individuals. Curcumin may also be an alternative for people who cannot exercise.

GREGORY CHANDLER--GREEN TEA AND CELLULAR DAMAGE
Individuals with metabolic syndrome often have high levels of cellular damage from oxidative stress, and lower levels of circulating antioxidants.
In one study, 35 individuals with metabolic syndrome took four cups of green tea per day, two capsules of green tea extract with four cups of water per day, or a placebo of four cups of water per day.
After eight weeks, while there were no changes for the placebo group, the two green tea groups had much lower levels of oxidative stress and much higher levels of circulating antioxidants. For those who had taken the extract form of green tea, iron levels declined compared to the start of the study, while copper, selenium, and zinc levels remained stable.
Researchers opine that green tea may help reduce the cellular damage from metabolic syndrome.

GREGORY CHANDLER--DHA AS A MEMORY BOOSTER
Memory boosters have been in the news recently. Working professionals and students have been known to use memory boosters.
Omega-3 DHA improved memory in women and men. In the study, 176 non-smokers, aged 18 to 45, with low DHA from diet, took a placebo or 1,160 mg of DHA per day. After six months, compared to placebo, memory improved in both men d women taking DHA. Women had the most improvement in remembering times, places, and emotions--brain functions known as episodic memory. Men were able to more quickly recall images and words, and to comprehend, reason, and act or react faster to this information--brain functions known as working memory.
The use of omega-3 DHA may be a beneficial substitute for controlled substances in the goal to improve memory.

Individuals who are overweight can have blood sugar problems similar to those with type 2 diabetes, where the body does not produce enough insulin or does not use insulin to efficiently metabolize glucose.
In one study. 46 overweight males took olive leaf extract each day or a placebo, in two alternating 12-week phases. The daily amount of the main active ingredient in olive leaf extract was oleuropein, which was taken in pill form in a single dose.
While there were no improvements during the placebo phases, after each olive leaf phase, insulin sensitivity--the ability of cells to use insulin to metabolize glucose--improved 17 percent. Also, cells in the pancreas responsible for secreting insulin improved by 28 percent, a benefit that does not occur with the diabetes drug metformin.

GREGORY CHANDLER--CURCUMIN
Researchers conducted experiments on three different species. The researchers gave roundworms a low concentration of curcumin. Compared to roundworms without curcumin, the curcumin group had an average lifespan of 39 percent.
In fruit flies, the average lifespan with curcumin increased by 16 days, or 25 percent.
In male mice, beginning treatment at 13 months of age,
those receiving curcumin lived an average of 84 days longer
than those without curcumin.

GREGORY CHANDLER- Vitamin K2
Many do not realize that bone is a living tissue. Bone constantly forms and breaks down by binding or releasing calcium. As long as bones form more than break down, bones stay strong. Vitamin K, one of the lesser known vitamins, is essential for binding calcium to bone.
In one study, 244 healthy postmenopausal women took 180 mcg off vitamin K2 per day or a placebo. After three years, lumbar-spine bone mineral density in the placebo group had declined by 1.5 percent while the K2 group had lost less than one-half percent.
In order to bind calcium, bone produces a protein called osteocalcin. Researchers measured levels of circulating inactive osteocalcin, where high levels signal bone is breaking down. After the three-year study, there was a 4 percent increase in inactive osteocalcin levels for placebo while the vitamin K group had a 50 percent decrease, signaling better bone formation.

Acai is being studied as an anti-inflammatory. Researchers have isolated an antioxidant in acai, called velutin, and measured its
anti-inflammatory effects. The researchers exposed white blood
cells to inflammatory molecules, with or without one of several flavoniods, including velutin.
Velutin was the most potent in reducing inflammatory molecule activity.

GREGORY CHANDLER--VITAMIN D
Vitamin D is often known as the sunshine vitamin. In earlier times, individuals usually received adequate amounts of vitamin D because of sun exposure. Today, individuals spend more time indoors out of the sun. There is also the legitimate fear of skin cancer because of overexposure to sunlight.
According to the American Journal of Cardiology, medical doctors found 70 percent of heart patients were deficient in vitamin D and 30 percent had normal levels.
Those who were deficient were more likely to have high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, weakened heart muscles, and diabetes. In addition, over the course of six years, were 164 percent more likely to die from any cause compared to those with normal vitamin D levels. Also, those who were deficient were able to increase their chances of survival by 61 percent by supplementing with vitamin D.
