Magnesium helps promote muscle relaxation and, therefore, deep sleep. 

Magnesium acts as a relaxant and can even lower cortisol levels brought
on by the stress of intense physical training.  Since magnesium is a muscle
relaxant, it reduces muscle soreness and the muscle stiffness that follows
intense physical training. 

Magnesium is also commonly used for other health related issues such as
insomnia, cardiovascular function, depression, migraine headaches,
improved blood pressure and improved blood sugar.
