GREGORY CHANDLER- Vitamin K2

Many do not realize that bone is a living tissue.  Bone constantly forms and breaks down by binding or releasing calcium.  As long as bones form more than break down, bones stay strong.  Vitamin K, one of the lesser known vitamins, is essential for binding calcium to bone.

In one study, 244 healthy postmenopausal women took 180 mcg off vitamin K2 per day or a placebo.  After three years, lumbar-spine bone mineral density in the placebo group had declined by 1.5 percent while the K2 group had lost less than one-half percent.

In order to bind calcium, bone produces a protein called osteocalcin.  Researchers measured levels of circulating inactive osteocalcin, where high levels signal bone is breaking down.  After the three-year study, there was a 4 percent increase in inactive osteocalcin levels for placebo while the vitamin K group had a 50 percent decrease, signaling better bone formation.

GREGORY CHANDLER ON ACAI

Acai is being studied as an anti-inflammatory.  Researchers have isolated an antioxidant in acai, called velutin, and measured its
anti-inflammatory effects. The researchers exposed white blood
cells to inflammatory molecules, with or without one of several flavoniods, including velutin.

Velutin was the most potent in reducing inflammatory molecule activity.

GREGORY CHANDLER--VITAMIN D

Vitamin D is often known as the sunshine vitamin.  In earlier times, individuals usually received adequate amounts of vitamin D because of sun exposure.  Today, individuals spend more time indoors out of the sun.  There is also the legitimate fear of skin cancer because of overexposure to sunlight.

According to the American Journal of Cardiology, medical doctors found 70 percent of heart patients were deficient in vitamin D and 30 percent had normal levels.

Those who were deficient were more likely to have high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, weakened heart muscles, and diabetes.  In addition, over the course of six years, were 164 percent more likely to die from any cause compared to those with normal vitamin D levels.  Also, those who were deficient were able to increase their chances of survival by 61 percent by supplementing with vitamin D.

Gregory Chandler on Pomegranate Juice

Pomegranate juice is being promoted as a testosterone booster.  A new study finds that males who consumed a glass of pomegranate juice a day increased testosterone levels by a significant 16 % to 30%.

The subjects also reported having improved mood and less negative feelings after the two-week experiment.  Drinking pomegranate juice also led to an increased sex drive and lower blood pressure readings.

GREGORY CHANDLER--OMEGA-3 AS A MEMORY ENHANCER

Many students and professionals take drugs such as Ritalin to enhance memory.

A natural alternative to Ritalin is omega-3 fatty acids.  Omega-3 fatty acids may be found in fish oil supplements.

A recent study found that individuals enhanced their memory by taking omega-3 supplements for six months.

GREGORY CHANDLER --CARNOSINE BENEFITS

Carnosine is a dipeptide composed of two amino acids,
beta-alanine and L-histadine.  Studies have shown that with supplementation of beta-alanine and L-histadine, carnosine
levels increase in as little as four weeks and can increase 80
percent after 10 weeks of supplementation.

Carnosine is a regulator of intracellular pH levels, keeping your muscles healthy and allowing you to push yourself to the limit all while continuing to make positive training adaptions, new capillary beds in the muscles, increased blood flow, increases in lean muscle mass and better delivery of oxygen to the muscles.

Studies also show that carnosine:

  • Is a powerful antioxidant;
  • May slow the aging process;
  • May cure a hangover;
  • May reduce muscle soreness and the effects of delayed onset muscle soreness.

The key to keeping carnosine levels high is by supplementing with beta-alanine and L-histadine.  The most effective dosage is 2 grams (2,000 mg) of beta-alanine and 1 gram (1,000 mg) of L-histadine taken twice per day even on off days to maintain high carnosine levels.

GREGORY CHANDLER--CALCIUM AS A FAT BURNER

When individuals take in fewer calories than they burn, calcium supplements may stimulate fat loss.

In one review, researchers analyzed eight placebo-controlled calcium weight-loss studies and found that dieters who got high levels of calcium increased fat metabolism by 11 percent compared to a placebo.  Those who consumed low levels of calcium before the study--less than 700 mg per day--saw the most fat-loss benefit by consuming more calcium during the study.  Researchers said the higher rate of fat-burning was equal to losing eight pounds per year.

In discussing their findings, researchers said that calcium supplements raised the metabolic rate as effectively as caffeine.  The average amount of calcium linked with the largest
weight-loss benefit was 958 mg of calcium per day.
